Friday Five, #11

1. I spent some time this week in two of our local used bookstores. Bookstores, used or not, are pretty cool. Used books’ prices though, are not as cool as I had imagined. I priced some books at both stores that I recently purchased on BN.com (in the Bargain Books section) and BN was cheaper. And the books from BN are new. And they come right to my door. Free shipping! And they are new! The moral of the story? BN rocks the bargain books!

2. Plus I didn’t have to put on shoes to order online. Or a bra. So win-win.

3. But I must say the guy who owns/manages The Book Nook on University is a very cool guy. He knows his books and knows his inventory. So he rocks too!

4. Used books in good shape make me happy. They have lived a good life with someone who loved them.

5. But used books that have been abused make me very very sad. I found a copy of Sidney Poitier’s The Measure of a Man that looked like it had been used as someone’s notepad by the telephone. There were all kinds of cryptic messages and phone numbers and doodles all over the back cover and some of the last few pages.

SO NOT COOL.

Sure, I know it’s four now

Although I usually get out of bed very early in the morning, I just learned today that my brain doesn’t officially wake before 9:18 AM. (Well, I had some idea before, but today clinched it.) That was about the time I was having this conversation in my head as I was driving towards Peoria:

I like the blue color of that car. {singing to the radio — Elton John, I think it was} Huh – it has a license plate similar to David’s car. What was the story behind that message on the license plate? {think, think…hmmm} That’s funny, who would have thought there would be another license plate so similar to his? {change of radio station} You know what, that almost looks like David’s car. No, no not really. {ooh, the new Pink song! I like that one.} David would be on this road if he was going to work. {humming to the radio} I wonder if David is at work today? {more humming} Heehee, wouldn’t it be funny if that was David? {accelerate and sidle up next to the mysterious blue car with the strangely familiar license plate} Hey! That’s David! {light bulb comes on over head} Whadya know? {HONK HONK} Hi David!

Yeah, the whole putting of 2 and 2 together to make…anything? Totally beyond my grasp before 9:18 AM.

Mental health day

I have the day off today! Woo hoo!

I went to bed feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve. All giggly and squiggly and anticipatory.

And I woke like a kid on Christmas morning. All excited and squirmy and antsy…and groggy because after all, it was 4:30 in the freaking morning!

I’m going to run downstairs and see what Santa brought because I have been a very good girl!

Oh, wait…that isn’t right. But I am going to run. Because I really don’t want to waste a minute of this gift of a day.

Selective hearing

Our supervisor came over and asked my co-worker and me what our top two priorities are for 2008. She meant which projects did we think were most important and deserved to be considered for inclusion in the budget.

This is how we responded. Without a moment’s hesitation, I might add:

He: #1 – to get the heck out of here!

Me: and #2 — still be breathing when we do!

She: Alrighty then. So I’ll put you down as ‘needing to think about it’.

Mm, mm, good

I just soaked my hair in this stuff. It looks horrible (oily ala Squiggy…well, if Squiggy had hair half-way down his back) but boy does it do wonders on dry hair. Tomorrow I’ll wake up with silky smooth waves. Luscious.

And I can’t quite figure out what fragrance it has — but I smell like cookies. All of this and four hours of Vincent D’Onofrio…it just doesn’t get any better.

Who says I never have fun? :)
