Sweet Thursday, by John Steinbeck

From the bn.com site:

In Monterey, on the California coast, Sweet Thursday is what they call the day after Lousy Wednesday, which is one of those days that are just naturally bad. Returning to the scene of Cannery Row-the weedy lots and junk heaps and flophouses of Monterey, John Steinbeck once more brings to life the denizens of a netherworld of laughter and tears-from Fauna, new headmistress of the local brothel, to Hazel, a bum whose mother must have wanted a daughter.

Of all the things I did this year, choosing to read Steinbeck was definitely one of the better ones. His characters are some of the most enjoyable people in fiction. Sweet Thursday picked up a few years after Cannery Row ended and it was like returning to a favorite vacation spot. The reader knows that they are going to have a good time before they even start the adventure of reading it.

I love Steinbeck.

Oooh I love Steinbeck, too. Maybe I will re-read him next year. Your posts are reminding me how much I have enjoyed his work over the years.
