I can attribute a hearty portion of my holiday melancholy to the stress of not having a single gift purchased. I usually am the one to have everything bought, gift wrapped, and in a tote, ready to load into the vehicle, by Thanksgiving. And if my calendar is correct, Thanksgiving has come and gone.
And the freaking out has started.
There are not a lot of people on my list. My parents and step-parents, my two nephews and niece, my grandpa, and my mother’s yellow lab (who technically isn’t a ‘people’ but I love him and he’s family). That’s it. Nine recipients in total…not counting people like the mail carrier who get the same thing every year and thus require no thought on my part. My friends, who like to exchange gifts, are being asked to please donate that money to charity. (Did you read that, friends?)
I did have one idea for my step-father. Last year, he wanted some new-fangled fancy coffee brewing machine but didn’t get it. So I thought that would be perfect for him this year. And then two weeks ago he decided that part of his health problems might stem from his addiction to coffee so, with absolutely no regard for my need to cross something off my list, he decided to swear off the stuff. What kind of a person does that, I ask you?
Today, I did decide on what to get my grandpa and the dog. The rest may just be SOL. Even my nephews and nieces can’t tell me what they want. They are all just being completely uncooperative. It may come down to, as Issa recommended, gift cards for the whole lot of them. Whoopee! Little pieces of plastic for everybody! Merry Christmas and a Fa La La La Letdown!
So, please tell me you’re having difficulty with at least one person on your list. I really could use even a small measure of camaraderie to help me through this most trying time. And what do you do when the ideas won’t come? Do you have a fallback gift that works for you?

I’m generally not a big fan of the gift card, but with the advent of mp3 players, an iTunes gift card is even better than a CD, which was always my fall-back gift. Any of them have iPods?

I never know what to get for my sister-in-law. She’s really hard to shop for. I stopped getting her clothes because I never see her wear any of it. Jewelry? Forget it. One year I did buy her a beautiful nightgown/robe/slipper set through LL Bean because she’s always cold, but I don’t know if I can do that every year without it getting old.
Every year I find I buy more and more gift cards. I’d much rather get one of those than have to return something.
Is that lazy?

Hey now, it was a good idea. Especially the iTunes idea Alissa said. Although, I can see why it isn’t as cool to buy and wrap them.
I guess you don’t want to hear that I’m completely done except for my husband, right? Or that I wrapped it all, right?
Now my husband has no idea what he wants and is possibly going to get coal. So there is that.

Oh and I love the new look. All you smart people and your holiday themes. I love it, it’s so festive.

Oh and for a third comment….have you looked at making a Blurb Book? This is what we’re doing for our parents. Some old photos, some new, but they come out looking pretty cool.

I’m big on books and this year everyone’s getting magazine subscriptions. It’s the gift that really keeps on giving. Every month you get something fun and interesting in the mail. What could be better?

It’s always the same to people, two Uncles! They are very tricky… they might just get B&N gift cards.

I am with you! The camaraderie is here! I have not one single gift either and I, too, am freaking!
What do you get a seventeen-year-old boy? or an 87 year-old man for that matter?
Ack!!!

I have a few gifts and know what I want for several of the others, but I’m struggling with a gift for my dad. Rather impossible, really. I’m hoping to get some hint of something he wants when he visits here next week.
